Home For The Holidays

21 Dec

I never fully realized just how empty the holidays can feel when you’re missing a family member, or how you feel when that family member is able to come home.

My husband left on what was supposed to be a 9 month deployment which was going to include missing Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.  And while it is part of being in the military and it is a “choice” that we made with his career it was still a bummer.  Somehow, by a Christmas miracle of sorts, his ship was recalled to homeport in time for the holidays so they could get some work done.  Talk about a Merry Christmas from the U.S. Navy.

The possibilities of his not being home made me really look at how family affects the holidays.  From the deployed soldier to the lone college student who can’t afford to go home, there are a lot out there who spend a sad holiday without their loved ones and it makes me appreciate the fact that I can have my husband (and my little one can have her dad) home that much more.
